The Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus (MDPBC) commends Former State Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo for her leadership, championing black representation for the city of Detroit and Michigan. We unequivocally stand in agreement with this constitutional victory, and we applaud and extend gratitude to the Agee vs. Benson plaintiffs who made this victory possible. We are profoundly thankful for their courage and self-determination that proved instrumental in our collective progress.
The Michigan Democratic Party Black Caucus (MDPBC) is honored to work with the Agee vs. Benson plaintiffs to offer amendments to the Motown Sound FC E1 map, of which seemingly focuses solely on incumbency protections, yet not maximizing the number of black State House districts in Detroit. The amendments offered by MDPBC seeks to add an additional three seats to the Motown FC E1 map, to ensure 9 robust black State House Districts in Detroit, and one in Warren, accounting for the progression of urban sprawl in Northeast contiguous municipalities.
The MDPBC strategic adjustments reflect our steadfast commitment to promoting fair representation for black communities, aligning closely with the allocation outlined in the original Motown Sound FC E1 map. Moreover, the amendments of the Motown Sound FC E1 map, meticulously crafted by the MDPBC, prioritizes the preservation of cohesive communities. By addressing the potential risk of fragmentation posed by the previous map, we aim to uphold the unity of neighborhoods and prevent any possible disenfranchisement.
Notably, our amended map strategically intersects 8 Mile Road only once, effectively safeguarding the cohesion of black communities in western Detroit. This deliberate approach underscores our unwavering dedication to fostering inclusivity and amplifying the voices of historically marginalized groups in the political arena. This amendment to the Motown Sound FC E1 map serves as a testament to our commitment to fair representation and the empowerment of black communities. By ensuring the integrity of communities and elevating black voices within Michigan’s State House districts. We strive to contribute to a more equitable political landscape in Detroit.
